This exceptional CD contains 16 'italian' songs that Dean sings in his unique half-italian/half-english way. 'Non dimenticar means don't forget' that goes certainly to the unforgettable, wonderful, lazy-voice, smiling-face Dean Martin. Enjoy. - Παράθεση :
- Born of a first generation Italian-American mother and an immigrant father who hailed from the Abruzzi region of Italy, young Dino spoke only his father Gaetano's native language until the age of five. At that time mama Angela put her foot down and insisted that Gaetano - now Anglicized to Guy - cease speaking to her youngest son in Italian, no easy feat for papa Guy since the King's English - English of any kind, for that matter - was not Guy's strong point. Dino entered school not only toting his books but also an accent as thick as his wavy dark hair. That accent, a source of social derision heaped upon him by his fellow classmates, would serve him well in his chosen profession. And that profession was evident early on, as everyone with even the slightest connection to the future Dean Martin in his hometown of Steubenville, Ohio concurs that he was always singing; around the house, at school, in the playground, at the numerous jobs he held in his formidable years. Dino Crocetti knew that his ticket out of working class Steubenville would be the rich baritone he initially patterned after his first idol, Bing Crosby.
As a result of his early exposure to the noble Roman tongue, Dean Martin became one of the few (if not only) American-born pop singers who sang Italian songs with authenticity and the charm inherent in their melodies and lyrics. Even fellow Rat Pack leader, Frank Sinatra, perhaps the most important vocalist and Italian-American of the Twentieth Century, only attempted to sing in the language of his ancestors on few occasions, and that was phonetically rather than authentically. But like everything else he did, Dean made it sound effortless and easy, blended with just a hint of whimsy. Oh yes, that latter quality is a crucial part of the Dino musical equation. Here's a test: Close your eyes while listening to this flawless recordings, picture Dean, and try - just try - not to smile. (A personal interjection if I may: as a weekend guest at Mr. Sinatra's home several years ago, over after-dinner drinks, this writer heard Francis Albert proclaim to all present that "Dean is the most naturally funny human being God ever put on this earth.")
Classifying Italian as one of the Romantic Languages seems redundant in Dean's hands. True, many of the songs in this collection are sung entirely in English, but when filtered through the Martin vocal chords, they evoke the unmistakable ambiance of the Mediterranean, transcending language and geographical boundaries. Dean could have sung them in Swahili and they would still have been Italian love songs. Period. No other artist had as many Italian songs so closely associated with his career before Dean, and no one has come close since.
When Dean Martin passed away on Christmas Day in 1995, his 'pally', Joe Bishop paid tribute to his friend in the most simplistic yet poignant way when he said it was "a great Christmas present for the angels."
